Situated in one of Philadelphia’s underserved neighborhoods, the Cobbs Creek Nature Playground exemplifies the city’s renewed commitment to equitable and high-quality public space investment. This innovative project, resulting from collaboration with the Rebuild program and the local community, stands as one of the city’s most transformative public spaces. Nestled at the edge of the city’s boundary and overlooking the creek system, the playground overcame challenges from historical underinvestment. Despite this, the site boasts large trees of significant cultural importance to a community facing recent urban canopy loss. These trees, combined with the playground’s proximity to the Cobbs Creek neighborhood and the Community Environmental Center, imbue the site with a unique sense of urban nature.
Inspired by the site’s woodland qualities, the project offers a nature-based, inclusive play experience. Conceptualized as a clearing among existing trees, the playground features a loop path to preserve and integrate trees into the play experience. Within this loop, diverse zones of nature-based play cater to children of all ages, with ample space for caretakers. The design also incorporates wooden play features salvaged from trees cut down or damaged in other areas of Philadelphia parks.
The Design Team, comprised of architects, landscape architects, and civil and structural engineers, were engaged by Rebuild in Philadelphia to manage concept design through construction documents for the Nature Playground at Cobbs Creek. Throughout the process, the Design Team collaborated with Rebuild’s Community Engagement Consultant, facilitating focus groups, surveys, workshops, and outreach to incorporate the voices of the West Philadelphia community. The final design prioritizes intergenerational play, engages with nature through natural materials and features, improves circulation and connectivity, creates a designated area for caretakers, and celebrates inclusivity by providing recreational space for a diverse group of users.
